  1. I gave birth 16months ago at hotel dieu de France and i have great memories of those 3days I spent at the hospital! Everything was perfect. Great caring nurses and midwife. Easy delivery. The baby was only away from me the first few minutes while they were cleaning him and then they gave him to me so that I can breastfeed him and we went up to the room together. He stayed with me day and night. His diapers were changed in my room, and I accompanied him when they bathed him.
New moms at the maternity ward were asked to assist to a 'class' teaching them how to bathe the baby, then a class on breastfeeding, and were also given a few tips on how to take care of their own nutrition and health while after getting out of the hospital.
I am pregnant again now, and will definitely deliver again at this hospital.
The only small negative side of the hotel dieu experience is the fact that there are some medical students who might attend the delivery in addition to the doctors, midwife, nurses, etc., which makes a bit of a crowd in the delivery room and might get u a bit stressed if u r looking for intimacy.

  2. I gave birth at HDF in July 2011. I found the staff fairly attentive and respectful of my wishes. For the delivery, it's clear that the medical staff are not used to asking the patient's opinion a lot (the midwives were happy to break my waters and put me on Pitocin without checking with me at all, but refrained when asked, until I had spoken to the doctor) but I think that's the same in all Lebanon (and other places). There were quite a few interns/trainees. I had planned to ask them to leave as the doc said was my right, but in the end I didn't mind. After the birth the baby was cleaned and weighed in the adjoining room. My husband could go back and forth between us both. The baby was given me the first time about an hour after birth (after they had stitched up the episiotomy) and I fed her in the delivery room. With the epidural I wasn't allowed to eat or drink water until about 1h30 after the birth.
I stayed in a shared room in the older building which had an en suite toilet. The shower was down the corridor. The midwives and other staff were very helpful and friendly during my stay after the delivery. Since it was a shared room my husband couldn't stay, but a female friend/relative would have been allowed to stay, though there was only a chair to sleep in. However my husband was allowed to stay beyond visiting hours (he stayed from 8am to 10pm). The staff were quick to respond to the call buzzer throughout the night. They changed the baby every time on my bed in front of me. They took her for a while each morning for the bath and paediatrician. Otherwise she was with me constantly. They all insisted they never gave formula as I wanted to exclusively breastfeed. The midwives demonstrated the bath on the second day, though in great haste. The nutritionist came to my bed to dispense her advice as I wasn't able to attend with the others. All the staff were pleasant. The trainee midwives and anaesthetist were not very professional, though another anaesthetist I met was very professional. I'd likely choose the same hospital second time round.
